HTML'de headings olarak tanımlanan bu etiketler başlıklar için tasarlanmıştır. Yazılarda, makalelerde, haberlerde vb. gördüğünüz sayfanın hiyerarşik biçimde görünmesini sağlarlar. Arama motorları için başlıklar çok önemlidir çünkü motorlar başlık derecelerine bakarak sayfanın yapısını çıkarır ve öyle indeksler.
Tam olarak 6 başlık etiketi vardır. En büyük başlık <h1> olmak üzere yazı büyüklüğü küçülerek <h6> ya kadar devam eder. Her başlık etiketinin yazı büyüklüğü ve yazı kalınlığı kendisine has olduğu için bu tip ayarlar ekstra olarak yapılmamalıdır. Ayrıca tarayıcılar otomatik olarak başlık etiketlerinin etrafına biraz boşluk (margin) eklerler, bu yüzden başlıktan sonra veya önce gelen element ile arasında mesafe olur.
